During the Napoleonic era (c. 1800-1813), Oosterhout was granted city status (1809) by Louis Napoleon, brother of Emperor Napoleon and King of Holland.

Castle: There are five historic castles, such as De Blauwe Camer (St. Catherine's Valley).
Monasteries: The Holy Triangle comprises the Norbertine Sisters (St. Catherine's Valley), the Benedictine Sisters (Our Lady's Abbey), and the former St. Paul's Abbey (now Chemin Neuf).
Churches: St. John's Basilica is a major attraction.

The area is characterized by a variety of coniferous and deciduous forests, drifting sands, and historical sites.

Besides the amusement parks and campsites in Oosterhout, there are plenty of wonderful cycling and walking locations. Oosterhout is an excellent base for hiking and cycling enthusiasts, with routes that combine history, forests, and polder landscapes. Popular trails lead through the Dorst forestry area, the Vrachelse Heide, and past the historic Heilige Driehoek (monasteries) or the Zuiderwaterlinie (Southern Water Line). Mountain bikers can enjoy challenging trails.











The Efteling - Amusement park.
Also nearby is Efteling in Oosterhout, voted number 2 of the 25 best amusement parks in Europe. It's a twenty-minute drive away.
Efteling in Kaatsheuvel is the largest amusement park in the Benelux and one of the oldest theme parks in the world, opened in 1952. The park is known for its fairytale atmosphere (inspired by Anton Pieck), the Fairytale Forest, various roller coasters, and is open 365 days a year.

A compact city center with the Arendshof shopping center and numerous shops and restaurants.
Oosterhout (NB) offers a charming, historic center with a mix of large chain stores (Arendshof) and unique boutiques in streets like Kerkstraat and Keiweg.
It's an excellent destination for a day out, with plenty of nightlife options in Klappeijstraat and the Markt, including traditional pubs and restaurants.
